Throughout history, ethnic conflicts have always been happening in different corners of the world. However, ethnic conflicts are complicated because of the multiple definition of ethnicity. According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, the definition of ethnicity is the fact or state that belonging to a social group that has a common national or cultural tradition. When to different groups with different national or cultural tradition comes together, a conflict is very likely to occur. This blog post will discuss two ethnic conflicts. The first one being Lebanon armed conflicts between the government and the opposition. The second one being ethnic conflicts in Afghanistan.
Lebanon was prevented to hold presidential election since November 2007 because of disagreement between the government, which was backed by the western world, and the opposition, which was backed by Syria. on May 7, 2008, the army and anti-government militias started clashes to the speech after the government decided to close the Al Manar TV channel backed by the opposition group, Hezbollah. On May 21, 2008, the opposition and the government signed Doha agreement which restored partial peace back into Lebanon, and they conduct a presidential election after six months without a presidential figure in the country on May 25, 2008.
There are four large ethnic groups in Afghanistan, Tajiks, Hazaras, Uzbeks and Pushtuns. The Taliban committed gruesome massacre targeting Tajiks, Hazaras and Uzbeks. In 1998, the United Nations accused Taliban to stop emergency food aid to hungry and starving people who were mostly Hazaras and Tajiks. Taliban, mainly made up by Pushtuns, hunts women, elder and children from other ethnic groups . However, in 2010, President Hamid Karzi set up a panel to investigate ethnic conflicts as he thinks Taliban is a living military threat to the government.
